Toga to operate Adina Apartment Hotel Mascot

Toga Hotels is pleased to announce plans to open a new hotel in late 2013 to be known as Adina Apartment Hotel Mascot.

Located less than 1km from Sydney Airport on Bourke Road, Capital Corporation will soon commence construction on the purpose built apartment hotel.

Once complete, Adina Apartment Hotel Mascot will feature:

123 apartments with a mix of:

Adina Apartment Hotel Royal Randwick Racecourse

Australian Turf Club (ATC) Chairman John Cornish announced today that international company Toga Hotels has signed an Agreement to manage a 170 room, 4 star apartment hotel at Royal Randwick.

Branded Adina Apartment Hotel Royal Randwick Racecourse, the unique track fronting hotel is part of the ATC's world-class redevelopment of Royal Randwick Racecourse and its vision to create Sydney's best racing, entertainment and events destination.

This hotel is a key part of a growing array of centralised services and accommodation to benefit Members and the broader community. ATC is also taking advantage of a buoyant Sydney hotel market, with occupancy rates near all time highs and room rates on the increase.

The hotel will be located along Alison Road at the end of the main straight, with spectacular views over the racetrack towards the winning post and across Centennial Park to the city skyline.

The new hotel will provide quality accommodation to race day attendees, local and visiting businesses, as well as tourists, event goers and the surrounding community including UNSW, Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney Cricket Ground, Allianz Stadium, Sydney International Airport, and Sydney CBD.

A restaurant, pool deck bar and conference facilities within the hotel will provide superior dining and business facilities to hotel guests, race-goers and the local residential and business community.

"Very few new Sydney hotels have been developed in recent years. Our research shows there is strong demand for rooms to service the needs of visitors to the event precinct of Royal Randwick and its surrounding neighbours which includes the Eastern Suburbs beach precincts," Mr Cornish said. 

Similarly the Children's Hospital requires rooms for visiting surgeons, specialists, families and patients; whilst UNSW is regularly looking for accommodation for visiting lecturers and students.

"On race days we will be able to accommodate our intrastate, interstate and international visitors trackside, which will be highly valued during Carnivals.

"Our growing non-raceday meetings, conference and events business will be greatly enhanced with onsite accommodation and additional conference facilities just a few kilometres from the Sydney Airport, Sydney CBD and Bondi Beach."

Minister for Racing, George Souris, has congratulated the Board of the Australian Turf Club for its vision and forward thinking in its latest project at Royal Randwick.

"This magnificent facility on the edge of Sydney's CBD, is much needed, providing much needed accommodation, conference space, restaurants and facilities for racing participants, Mr Souris said.

"The hotel development will greatly compliment the current redevelopment of Royal Randwick which will make it the envy of the thoroughbred racing world with the most modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

"Royal Randwick is situated on the doorstep of Australia's global city and this extensive rebuilding and much needed hotel project will not only benefit race day crowds, but position Sydney to leverage fresh tourism and visitation with the new purpose-built sporting, recreation and event facilities."

The hotel will be operated by the Toga Hotels, who are responsible for the management of 52 hotels across Australia, New Zealand and Europe under the recognised brands of Adina Apartment Hotels, Medina Apartment Hotels, Vibe Hotels and Travelodge Hotels.

Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury still the city's 'mint' property

Adelaide, as anyone knows, is a quirky town. Established in 1836 by British free settlers, the city was beautifully designed and laid out by Colonel William Light with a foresight that South Australians enjoy to this day.

The quirkiness extends into numerous facets of Adelaide life and one of the most obvious is their extremes of architectural design. Early photos of the city show ornate Victorian and Edwardian buildings styled in rich, locally-hewn sandstone. Over the years many of these noble buildings have vanished, to be replaced by enormous glass, metal and marble monoliths of dubious aesthetic value. It is quite common to see surviving examples flanked by these “modern” monstrosities.

The centre of the city is Victoria Square, bordered by this awkward dichotomy of old and new, is presided over by some of the city’s best known classic buildings; the GPO, the courthouse, the former Moore’s department store and the old treasury building. In 2002 Toga Hospitality chose the Medina Serviced apartment brand to complete their total renovation of this very early, almost derelict Adelaide civic landmark, creating one of the most innovative and stylish serviced apartment projects anywhere. In 2004 it scooped the category at the HM Awards and garnered a UNESCO citation in 2003.

Finally I have the chance to experience this magnificent property, respectfully and tastefully restored right down to the original Premier’s Cabinet Room, courtyard garden and secret underground tunnels. Guided by long-serving reservations manager, Kasha Adams, newly installed GM, Ben Lancken and I tour the former corridors of power.

“We’ve had one or two guests ask to change rooms because of a spooky ‘presence’”, claims Kasha, “and there have also been tales of moving furniture, flying tools and noisy cocktail parties in vacant rooms.”

Many of the artefacts like coins, cans and cutlery uncovered during restoration work are displayed in cabinets.

As for future plans, I asked Toga Director of Brands and Communication, Lisa Phillips, about what Toga have in store for the Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury and the key to developing the unique customer experience.

“Over the past 12 months at Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury, we have continued to work hard on delighting each and every guest,” she says. “Our guests lie at the heart of everything we do and we have some wonderful initiatives in place to help us deliver a great experience, every time.

“A critical component to enhancing the guest experience is the ongoing training of our Team Members. “In order to do so, we will continue to roll out an ongoing upkeep schedule whilst working with our interior design team to constantly find new ways to showcase the hidden treasures and unique features of this hotel,” she says.

Developments of this scale and integrity are rare in Australia, especially in a CBD, with other examples like the Henry Jones Art Hotel in Hobart and Rothbury On Ann in Brisbane some of the few worthy contemporaries in this category.
